Frequently Asked Questions
These are not intended to frighten
you but to give you an insight into the breed.
Is A Weimaraner
For Me?
Yes, if you are prepared to put in the effort. They are an athletic,
highly intelligent Gundog, who requires a lot of work & commitment
from you. The more you put in to your Weimaraner, the more he will give
you back.
Dog Or Bitch?
This is a personal choice. I can only advise you but you must think
about your own circumstances. Males are generally the larger & more
dominant of the species. Males can be stroppy with other dogs. Once
a Weimaraner has been bitten by another dog, especially a male, they
NEVER forget. You should try to avoid putting your dog in this situation
otherwise you may end up with an anti-social dog on your hands.
Bitches can be mardy & can suffer from PMT. They normally have 2
seasons a year which means twice the PMT. Bitches in my experience,
are much more independent than males. If you have no intentions of breeding
then I suggest you get your Weimaraner neutered. That way hormones can
play no part in your Weimaraners life!
Can I have
An Un-docked Puppy?
There is now a docking ban which came into force on
April 6 2007. All traditionally docked breeds
can no longer be docked since this date.
However, there is a 'Working Exemption' and this enables working dogs
still to be docked. Docked dogs will not be allowed to be shown at any
dog show where the general public pay to spectate. However, it does
appear that most Championship shows are not charging an entrance fee
to the public enabling docked dogs to enter their shows.
I am continuing to dock
my puppies in line with current legislation & all the relevent paperwork
will be provided with each puppy. Each puppy will be microchipped before
they go to their new homes.
Does Docking
Hurt?
This is a matter for debate! My vet does NOT cut the tails off but prefers
to 'band' the tail. In this process, an orthodontic band is placed around
the tail at the required length and then the tail end gradually dies
off. Lambs tails are docked in a similar way.
The nerves of a newborn puppy grow gradually over the first few days.
If docking is done early enough, then the process would be one of discomfort
from being handled than that of pain. If you would like to know more
about docking, why not take a look at the Council
of Docked Breeds (CDB) Website?
Are Weimaraners
Good With Children?
Yes. However, a child should learn to respect the dog and visa versa.
No dog is going to like having his ears pulled, eyes poked& prodded
just like a child wouldn't like it. You should never allow your Weimaraner
to get into a situation with your child where the child gets bitten.
Dogs do not bite for no reason.
Do You Recommend
Cages? (Car & Indoor)
Yes! When you leave the puppy in the house if you do not have a cage,
you could come back to destruction. That would be your fault. If the
puppy is in his cage (indoor kennel), he cannot do any damage to your
house. You should make the cage a happy place & not just somewhere
you put him when he's naughty. If you cover the cage, you can make it
the puppy's den where he will gladly go. A puppy is generally easier
to house train if they are caged through the night & when you go
out. Animals do not like to mess in their own space so are likely to
stay clean until you let him out.
Car cages. Personally speaking, these are a must. The puppy is in a
safe area in the car. He cannot jump all over you whilst you are driving
or jump on the back seat. He will lay down & come to realise that
that is where he travels.
I had a car accident where I was hit from behind. I had one of my dogs
in the boot in the cage. The back window smashed all over the dog but
he was saved from being able to jump out of the car & onto the road.
If you get a custom made car cage, they do come with escape doors in
them in case of an accident.
Can I Buy
2 Puppies From The Same Litter?
No. Two litter mates only makes double trouble. They become dependant
on each other and forget that you are pack leader. I would suggest you
get 1 Weimaraner first, train him properly & around 12 months later
get another Weimaraner. The second dog will learn from the first &
this includes bad habits!!
What Do
You Feed Your Puppies?
The puppies will be weaned onto Arden
Grange Puppy food. This is a premium dry dog food although for puppies
under 8 weeks old I soak it in water to make it mushy. By the time the
puppies are 8 weeks old they will have been weaned from the Arden Grange
Puppy food onto Arden Grange Prestige which is their top of the range
premium dog food. You can buy it direct from Arden Grange.
Do You Recommend
Pet Insurance?
Most definitely! My puppies will leave for their new homes with 6 weeks
FREE insurance. You are encouraged to renew the insurance with a reputable
company. Vet bills can be extremely costly & providing you are insured,
you can be sure to get the best possible care for your pet. I usually
use the Kennel Club or Pet Plan for their free insurance.
How Often
Should I Worm My Weimaraner?
Your puppy will have been wormed at 3 & 6 weeks old with Drontal
Puppy wormer. You should seek advice from your veterinary surgeon but
it is suggested that you worm again at 9 weeks then monthly until 6
months old. After 6 months, your dog should be wormed every 3 months.
Do not think about buying wormers from the supermarket. They are over-priced
& are not efficient.
What Do
I Do If My Circumstances Change & I Am No Longer Able To Look After
My Weimaraner?
Don't panic! If you are in this situation, I would like you to let me
ASAP. If the dog needs rehoming, I would like the opportunity to help
you find a suitable home for your dog. If necessary, I will take the
dog back into my care without hesitation.
Please do NOT sell your dog without my prior knowledge. I have had experience
in rehoming dogs & therefore I probably have the contacts also.
